In a landmark decision that marks a new chapter in the history of the UK's public sector, Fiona Dunsire has been named the new Government Actuary. The announcement was made by the Financial Secretary to the Treasury on 2 August 2023, confirming Dunsire's appointment to a 5-year fixed term.
With an impressive career spanning 35 years in the private sector, Dunsire's expertise in pensions and investments is well-recognized. She has served in various roles, including as the UK CEO of Mercer from 2012 to 2019. A fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries since 1993, her credentials are beyond reproach.
Dunsire's appointment is historic as she will be the first female to hold the position of Government Actuary since its inception in 1917. She will assume the role later in 2023, succeeding Martin Clarke, who has served as the Government Actuary since 2014.
Expressing her delight at the appointment, Dunsire stated, "The GAD has a long and proud history of producing high-quality actuarial analysis across the public sector for over 100 years. I look forward to leading the department over the coming years and continue to broaden its impact in helping to address the multigenerational issues we face as a society."
Clarke, the outgoing Government Actuary, warmly congratulated Dunsire and wished her well in her new role, reflecting on his privilege to lead the department for over nine years.
The Government Actuary plays a crucial role as the principal actuarial adviser to the government. Leading the Government Actuary's Department (GAD), the role encompasses providing actuarial advice and support to the government and public sector. This includes understanding and analyzing financial risk and uncertainty for a wide range of contemporary issues, such as pension valuations, insurance, and social security.
Dunsire's appointment followed an open recruitment exercise, conducted in line with the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles and procedures. Her selection not only reflects her professional excellence but also symbolizes a significant step towards gender equality in top government roles.
The nation now looks forward to the fresh perspective and leadership that Fiona Dunsire is poised to bring to the Government Actuary's Department, as she takes on the challenges and opportunities of this vital position. Her appointment is a testament to her capabilities and a proud moment for women in the field of actuarial science.
