Civil Service Comissioner

Civil Service Commission Seeks New Commissioners

The Civil Service Commission, the independent body responsible for recruitment in the Civil Service, has announced its search for two to four new Commissioners. This move comes as part of the Commission's ongoing commitment to uphold the highest standards of public service and to reflect the diversity of the United Kingdom.

The Commission, which was established in 1855 following the Northcote-Trevelyan report, has a rich history of promoting the core values of the Civil Service: Honesty, Integrity, Objectivity, and Impartiality. It has been operating as an independent executive Non-Departmental Public Body since 2010, with its powers and responsibilities outlined in the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act.

In a video, the first civil service commissioner, Rt Hon Baroness Gisela Stuart of Edgbaston, expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming appointments. She highlighted the importance of the roles, stating that the new Commissioners will play a crucial part in preserving the highest standards of conduct in public life.

The new Commissioners will have a range of responsibilities, including chairing recruitment competitions for senior-level appointments, supporting Government Departments in promoting Civil Service values and adjudicating complaints related to recruitment and breaches of the Civil Service Code. They will also provide advice on strengthening the wider system to reinforce these values.

Baroness Stuart emphasized the importance of diversity in the Commission, encouraging applications from across the regions of Great Britain, particularly Wales. This is in line with the Government's leveling up agenda and the drive for greater diversity in the Civil Service.

Candidates interested in the role should be aware of the challenges facing the country and the Civil Service's role in addressing these. They should also have an understanding of effective leadership and the ability to work with vacancy holders to interpret what leadership capability is required for the given context. Other essential skills include excellent communication, strong judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Desirable criteria include an understanding of Wales, commercial expertise, experience in recruitment or HR at a senior level, substantial experience in regulation, and a commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion.

The closing date for applications is 11 September 2023 at 7 pm. Further information about the Commission’s work can be found at Civil Service Commission
